Arabic calligraphy and lettering as well as geometric shapes have been constantly used in Arabian art and decoration. Calligraphy and calligraphic styles are open to expression through words as well as through beauty and art. And it is with great pleasure that we have found very recently modern art that featured modernized Arabic calligraphy extensively.  At the end of November in Abu Dhabi, an arts exhibition was organized on the Saadiyat Island. It was one of the most brilliant exhibition of its kind in Abu Dhabi as it featured local and international galleries exhibiting art work. What was highly striking in the works of art exhibited was the extensive use of Arabic letters and calligraphy in creative and colorful ways. We also saw an extensive use of arabesques and geometric shapes and forms. Letters formed new styles and texts, some of which were abstract or with very abstract meanings. Artists also used shapes that looked like letters but that were not necessarily legible. Clearly, we could see that artists had let their imaginations carry them away…

It was great to see so many artistic works gathered in the same venue and it is to share the beauty of these works with you and to demonstrate the use of Arabic letters in art that we have written this article. We have taken photos for you as best as we could given the necessity of adjusting our angles in order to ensure that we do not photography passers-by. We present them to you as we have taken them.

لقد استُخدم دائماً الحرف والخط العربي والأشكال الهندسية في الفن والديكورات العربية. فان الخط العربي وأنماط الخط يعبران عبر البعد الجمالي للخط وعبر استعمال الكلمة. ومن دواعي سروري هو أني وجدت مؤخراً فناً حديثاً ظهرفيه الخط العربي على نطاقٍ واسعٍ. في نهاية شهر نوفمبر 2013 في أبوظبي، لقد تمّ تنظيم معرضٌ للفنون في جزيرة السعديات. وكان واحدٍ من أبرع المعارض في أبوظبي لأنه تضمن معارض فنونٍ محليةٍ ودولية. وما كان لافتاً للغاية في الأعمال الفنية المعروضة  هو الاستخدام القوي للاحرف العربية والخطوط بطريقة مبتكرة ومليئة بالالوان. ورأينا أيضاً استخداماً واسع النطاق للارابيسك والأشكال الهندسية. وكانت الاحرف تشكل انماطٍ ونصوصٍ جديدةٍ والتي كان بعضها مجرداً أو التي كانت معانيها مجردة. واستخدم الفنانين أيضاً أشكالاً تبدو كنصوص ولكن لاتقرأ بالضرورة. وكان من الواضح أن الفنانين قد سمحوا لمخيلاتهم ان تحملهم بعيداً

 

كان من الرائع أن نرى عدداً الكبيرٍ من الأعمال الفنية تُجمع في نفس المكان ولنشارككم جمال هذه الأعمال ولوصف استعمال الحروف العربية في الفن, لقد قمنا بكتابت هذه المقالة. لقد اخذنا الصور لك بأفضل ما يمكننا لاننا كنا مضطرين أن نضبط الزوايا من أجل ضمان عدم تصوير المارة. ونقدم لكم الصور كما هي

In the artistic work above entitled “Outsider”, Laure Ghorayeb portrays a character in black and white surrounded by smaller characters. In addition to using image to convey her artistic message, she delineates the face of her character with Arabic lettering, concepts and sentences. Under one of the character’s eyes she writes: “I carry the burden of the years without despair”. Instead of drawing the character's nose, she writes: “I am who was the most prominent”.  It is a piece with a substantial amount of detail surrounding the character and a clever use of letters to arouse the viewer’s curiosity.

في العمل الفني أعلاه بعنوان " الغريب " ، ترسم لور غريب شخصية بالأبيض والأسود وتحيطه بأحرفٍ صغيرةٍ. بالإضافة إلى استخدام الصورة للإيصال رسالتها، انها تحدد وجه الشخصية بكلمات وجمل. تحت واحدة من العيون تكتب : " احمل عبء السنين من دون يأس ". بدلاً من رسم الأنف، انها تكتب: "أنا من كان الأبرز " . ان هذا العمل يتضمن كميّة كبيرة من التفاصيل تحيط الشخصية  كما يتضمن استخداماً ذكيًّ من الرسائل لإثارة فضول المشاهد

In blue on a white vase (photo above), Rachid Koraïchi uses shapes similar to Arabic letters. It is with harmony and regularity that they cover the vase and that they are intertwined with other motifs such as the hamsa and vegetal and abstract motifs.

 

باستعمال اللون الازرق على إناءٍ أبيضٍ ( الصورة أعلاه )، يستخدم رشيد قريشي أشكالاً مماثلة للحروف العربية. وبشكلٍ منتظمٍ ومتناسقٍ, تغطي هذه الاشكال الاناء وتتشابك مع اشكالٍ اخرى كالخمسة و الاشكال النباتية والمجردة

Using completely different tones and colors (photo above), Bassem Al Sharqi introduces numbers in Arabic script, the word Coka using a modern Arabic font and traditional Arabic calligraphy surrounding a circle. Arabic letters do not cover a massive amount of space in this work of art but they definitely convey an Arabian and oriental touch on modern and hot shapes and colors.

باستخدام نغماتٍ وألوانٍ مختلفةٍ تماماً (الصورة أعلاه )، يقوم باسم الشرقي بادخال الأرقام في الكتابة العربية، وكلمة كوكا باستخدام الخط العربي الحديث و الخط العربي التقليدي الذي يحيط بشكلٍ دائري. لا تطغى الحروف العربية على هذا العمل الفني ولكنها بالتأكيد تضفي لمسة عربية وشرقية على الأشكال والألوان الحديثة والساخنة

Golnaz Fathi uses shapes resembling letters to develop and create an artistic abstraction with amazing colors. She strikes us with her piece's level of simplicity yet that arouse interest with symmetry and curves that create movement.

 

 

تستخدم غلناز فتحي أشكالاً تشبه احرف لتطوّر وتخلق فكرة فنيّة مجردة الفني ذات ألوانٍ مدهشة. انها تلفت نظرنا مع بساطة عملها التي تثير الاهتمام مع التماثل والمنحنيات التي تخلق الحركة

On a white background (details of art work above), Ghada Amer uses thread and color to draw and write. She uses a traditional font and beautiful lovely colors. The words are intertwined with abstract lines and colors. The overall image is a lady and the details are colors, threads and words.

Artistic creations with Arabic lettering and shapes did not stop here. Here are a few other amazing pieces that we have spotted and that we wanted to share for their beauty and for you to think about their commentary...

على خلفيةٍ بيضاء ( تفاصيل العمل الفني أعلاه) ، تستخدم غادة عامر الخيط و اللون للرسم والكتابة. وهي تستخدم خطاً تقليدياً وألوانٍ جميلة جداً. تتشابك الكلمات مع الخطوط وألوان المجردة. وتبين الصورة الشاملة وجه سيّدة وتبين التفاصيل الألواناً وخيوطٍ وكلماتٍ
