When I was much younger, I was a sales person in a retail store and I advised brides-to-be on their household linen needs. I loved to talk to clients and to come up with solutions to their problems. Young brides would also share their stories and tell me about the wedding preparations and their new houses. Weddings are the best thing in the world and I always enjoy hearing about weddings, going to weddings and listening to wedding stories.
In the country I worked in, it was common for young women to live with their parents until married. And I noticed that many of these young ladies were still very new at buying household linen and towels. They asked me many questions and were not sure what to set as their priority purchase. They also were not sure what to place on their beds in winter or in summer. It was a country where most beds were imported and the width of a double bed could vary from 1.4 meters (small European size) to 2.0 meters (King size). Many clients thought that their double bed was very “large” and hence wanted to buy items specifically made for a 2.0 meter width bed while the most common width in the market was 1.8 meters. This would mean that my clients would pay a premium for an extra-large size that they did not necessarily need; and it was my job to make sure that they purchased what they needed and had a great customer experience.
So if you are preparing a house for the first time in your life, what linens do you need for your bathroom? You will need something to step on when you exit your shower and bathtub. You will also need something to absorb the water you might sprinkle from your sink. You can either use a floor towel or a bathmat or even both if you have enough space between your sink and your shower or bathtub. Many brides also choose to buy bathrobes for the couple. They generally have matching colors or are embroidered or monogrammed. In terms of towels, the hand towel (50 x 100 cms) and bath towels are a must. Some buy bath towels for guests. Small 30 x 30 centimeter towels can be used either as a face towel or in the guests’ bathrooms. They are placed in a basket as a bundle and can be decorated with embroidery. Some brides also elect to buy towels of the following dimensions: 40 x 70 centimeters or 50 x 30 centimeters as a foot towel or to use for convenience instead of a hand towel.
And what about your double bed? This is largely dependent on the climate you live in and whether you have air-conditioning. What I always tell brides with new mattresses to buy is a mattress protector first as it guarantees that your mattress remains new and in good condition. If you live in a hot country and do not use air-conditioning, your best option is to buy a cotton blanket along with matching bed sheets and pillow cases. Cotton keeps you cool in summer and warm if a breeze enters your room. If you use air-conditioning, your room is expected to be cold at night and hence, you will need a comforter with a comforter cover or a thick bedspread with a flat sheet underneath it. In winter, you can use a comforter and, if your room is very cold, you can use a wool or velour blanket in addition to the comforter. There is a trend on using knit work as a blanket on double beds. What to put on your bed might also vary with trends in the market so always keep an eye on the fashion and on what’s happening in stores.

عندما كنت أصغر سناً, عملت في متجر بياضات منزليّة كانت ترتاده الفتايات قبل اعراسهن وكنت انصحهن على احتياجاتهن من المتجر. كنت احب التحدث مع الزبائن وحل مشاكلهم. وكُنّ العرائس الشابات تشاركنني قصصهن وتخبرني عن الاستعدادات لحفل الزواج ومنازلهن الجديدة. ان حفلات الزفاف هي حفلاتي المفضلة واستمتع دائماً بالاستماع الى قصص حفلات الزفاف وتحضيراتها واستمتع ايضاً بالذهاب إلى حفلات الزفاف
في البلد الذي كنت اعمل فيه, كان من المعتاد ان تسكن الشابات مع والديهن حتى زواجهن وانتفالهن الى بيتهن الجديد. ولاحظت في المتجر أن العديد من زبوناتي العرائس الشابات لا تزلن بلا خبرة في شراء البياضات المنزلية. كنّ تسألني الكثير من الاسئلة ولم تكننّ تعرف ما هي اولى اولوياتهن في شراء البياضات المنزلية. وكنّ أيضاً غير متأكدات من ما تضعنه على السرير في فصل الشتاء او فصل الصيف. كان يتم استيراد معظم الاسرة التي كانت موجودة في السوق مما يؤدي الى تراوح قياس عرض الاسرّة المزدوجة من 1.4 متر (أصغر الأحجام الأوروبية) إلى مترين (الحجم الملكي). كانت تعتقد معظم زبوناتي ان اسرّتهن المزدوجة كبيرة جداً وبالتالي كانت معظمهنّ تتجه للسلع المصنوعة خصيصاً للاسرة التي يبلغ عرضها مترين في حين ان العرض الأكثر شيوعاً في السوق كان 1.8 متراً. وهذا يعني أن زبوناتي كنّ تتجهن بشكلٍ لاشعوريٍّ لشراء منتج اغلى من المنتج الذي تحتجن اليه. وهنا يأتي دوري حيث كنت اتأكد من ان ما تخترنه هو ما يناسبهن وان تجربتهن الشرائية رائعة وممتازة
هنا سؤال: اذا كنت تعدين منزلك لأول مرة في حياتك, ما هي البياضات التي ستحتاجيها لحمامك؟ سوف تحتاجين الى منشفة تخطين عليها ما بعد الاستحمام. سوف تحتاجين أيضاً الى منشفة او سجادة قطنية لامتصاص الماء الذي قد ترشه من المغسلة. وحتى بامكانك استعمال المنشفة والسجادة في نفس الوقت. تختار ايضاً العديد من العرائس ان تشتري ارواب حمام للزوجين تكون الوانها متطابقة او تكون مطرزة باحرف اسمي الزوجين. اما بالنسبة للمناشف, ان منشفة اليدّ (وقياسها 50 × 100 سم) هي اكثر المنشفة ضرورة في البيت. امّا المناشف الصغيرة(30 × 30 سم), فهي تُستعمل للوجه او في حمام الضيوف. وهي تُوضع عادةً في حمام الضيوف في سلّةٍ جميلةٍ وتزينُ بالتطريز. وتختار بعض العرائس ان تشتريَ مناشفاً للقدم او للاستعمال العام دون دفع سعر منشفة اليد وتكون مقاسات هذه المناشف كالتالي: 40 × 70 سم أو 50 × 30 سم
وماذا عن السرير المزدوج وكيفية فرشه؟ هذا يعتمد إلى حدٍّ كبيرٍ على المناخ الذي تعيشين فيه وإذا كان لديك تكييف. ما اقوله دائماً للعرائس هو انه يجب اولاً شراء طبقة حامية للفرشة لضمان ابقاء فرشتك جديدة وبحالة ممتازة لبضعة سنوات. ان كنت تسكنين في بلدٍ حارٍ وكنت لاتستخدمين المكيف, ان الخيار الأفضل هو شراء بطانية مصنوعة من القطن مع شراشف و أكياس وسادة مطابقة الالوان. فالقطن يبقيك منتعشة في الصيف ودافئة إذا دخلت نسمة هواء الى غرفتك. اما إذا كنت تستخدمين التكييف الهوائي, من المتوقع أن تكون غرفتك باردة في الليل, وبالتالي سوف تحتاجين الى لحاف وغطاء لحاف او ستحتاجين الى غطاء سرير سميك مع شرشفٍ مسطحٍ تحته. في فصل الشتاء, يمكنك استخدام اللحاف واذا كانت غرفتك باردةً جداً, يمكنك استخدام بطانية صوف بالاضافة الى اللحاف. ومن الاتجاهات في الموديلات هذا الشتاء هو استعمال البطانية الصوف المنسوجة كالكنزة الصوفية. فما تضعينه على سريرك قد يختلف مع الموضة السائدة في السوق. لذلك يجب ان تتابعي ما يحصل في عالم البياضات المنزلية وفي متاجرها
