Compared to people my age, I have quite a distinctive taste in fabrics. For me, fabric is touch, texture, color and comfort or lack of it as the case maybe. I also love markets of all sorts with a special preference for old and traditional markets. This is why one of my hobbies is to go to fabric markets and open markets in new cities I visit.
On a Saturday in London, I was walking in Marylebone and I came across a new market that I had never seen before. It was a small market at the edge of Marylebone high street. I simply loved weekend markets in London. I always discovered new products, met new sales people and had amazing experiences. The stalls sold food, accessories and stuff made with fabric and textile. On one of them, a Thai lady exhibited various items of clothing and accessories and had thought about her business rationale: “I need to sell cheaper than regular stores but high enough to be profitable”. And she was right. The items she sold were much cheaper than what you would find in a regular store. At first, I was not too excited from buying from a stall but when I saw an item that was pink and priced at GBP 15 only, I became really excited. I touched the fabric and was disappointed immediately as I identified synthetic material, which would make using the item a nightmare. I then opted for something slightly more expensive but that would allow me to be comfortable and to love myself while using it. In general, always use natural fibers on your body such as wool, cotton, bamboo and natural silk. At times, some natural-synthetic mixes might have better fabric shaping properties. The amount of natural fiber should however be either equal to or more than the amount of synthetic material. When buying items for the house such as towels, it is imperative to opt for 100% natural material such as cotton and this is what Tamarindie sells.
One of the most fun experiences that I ever had was in the fabrics market of Abu Dhabi. Set in an old mall next to the traditional gold souk, the fabrics market was full of shops with bright colors and a few tailors scattered in its corners. It was a market where you had to bargain in order to obtain low prices. I enter a shop and engage in a lengthy conversation with its Syrian owner. I managed to convince him that I was only a quarter Syrian and that I deserved a discount. My friend, who stood silent as she did not like negotiations and bargaining in small stores, was smiling and holding back her laugh as the discussion unfolded. To become friends with the sales person, I shared my life story and took details of his. Before we left the store, the sales person gave me his best fabric at a low price. I love fabrics.

انني اشعر ان لدي طعمٌ مميزٌ جداً في الأقمشة مقارنةً بالاخرين. فبالنسبة لي, ان الاقمشة هي ملمسٌ ولونٌ وراحةٌ او عدم الراحة اذا اقتضى القماش بذالك. واحب ايضاً الاسواق بجميع أنواعها واحب بصورة خاصة الأسواق القديمة و التقليدية. ولذالك, من هواياتي الذهاب الى اسواق الاقمشة والى كل الاسواق التقليدية التى تُقام في الهواء الطلق في المدن الجديدة التي ازورها
وفي يومٍ من ايام السبت في العاصة الانكليزية لندن, كنت اسير في منطقة ماريليبون واذ المح سوقاً تقليديٍ جديدٍ لم ارَه من قبل. فقد كان صغيراً ومخبأً على حافة شارع ماريلبون هاي ستريت. وكنت ببساطة اعشق اسواق نهاية الاسبوع التقليدية في لندن. كنت اكتشف دائماً منتجاتٍ جديدةٍ والتقي واتكلم مع بائعين جدد وامّر بتجربة جديدة وممتعة. وفي السوق الذي دخلت اليه ذلك النهار, كانت تُباع الاكسسوارات والمأكولات واغراض مصنوعة من قماشٍ ونسيج. واذ اتوقف عند احدى البائعات. كانت سيدة تيلاندية تعرض الملابس والاكسسوار وكانت قد فكرة ملياً باستراتجيتها التجارية وقالت لي: "يجب ان تكون اسعاري اقلٌ من اسعار السوق ولكن يجب ايضاً ان يكون لدي ارباح". وكانت على حق, فقد كانت اسعارها اقلّ من اسعار المحلات العادية. في البداية, لم اكن انوي ان اشتري من هذا السوق الشعبي لكن عندما رأيت قميصاً زهري اللون وسعره خمسة عشر جنيه استرليني فقط, انتابني حماسٌ شديدٍ على الشراء. لكن عندما مسكت القماش, لمست مواداً اصطناعيةٍ تجعل القميص غير مريحة عند اللبس. لذى اخترت قميصاً آخراً ذات سعرٍ اغلى لكن استعماله سيجعلني احب نفسي. عامةً, تكون الاقمشة المكونة من اليافٍ طبيعيةٍ كالقطن والبامبو والصوف والحرير الطبيعي بغاية الراحة عند استعمالها. احياناً, تكون الاقمشة الممزوجة مزودة بخاصيات تعطي القماش شكلاً معيناً. وينبغي ان تكون نسبة الالياف الطبيعية في الاقمشة الممزوجة اما مساوية للالياف الاصطناعية او تزيد عن نسبة الالياف الاصطناعية. عند شراء اغراض للمنزل كالمناشف مثلاً, لابدّ من اختيار اقمشة مصنوعة من الالياف الطبيعية كالمناشف المصنوعة بالكامل من القطن الطبيعي وهذا مانبيعه لدى تامارندي
ومن امتع تجاربي في التسوق هو في سوق الأقمشة في أبوظبي الموجود في مركز مدينة زايد التجاري بالقرب من سوق الذهب. كانت محلات الاقمشة تبرز الواناً عديدةً وجميلةٍ ومتنوعة. وفي محلاتٍ اخرى كنا نرى الخياطين منهمكين على مكناتهم. كان من المتوقع ان يساوم المشتري ليحصل على سعرٍ جيدٍ. فاذ بي ادخل الى محلٍ من المحلات التجارية واقيم حديثٍ مطولٍ مع صاحب المحل السوري الاصل. تمكنت من إقناعه بأنني كنت ربع سورية وانني استحق خصم. ابتسمت صديقتي التي كانت بجانبي لتخبئ ضحكتها. كانت قد وقفت صامة لانها لاتحب المساومة. قبل مغادرتنا المخزن, اعطاني التاجر قماشاً ذات نوعية جيدة جداً بسعرٍ مخفضٍ. انني أحب الأقمشة كثيراً
